WMIC
WMIC and WMI
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) remains a supported management
infrastructure. wmic.exe was only one command-line client for WMI.
Microsoft deprecated WMIC in Windows 10 version 21H1. It became a disabled or
non-preinstalled Feature on Demand in Windows 11 version 24H2 and has since been
removed from current Windows 11 releases. Its removal does not remove WMI.
Use supported interfaces such as the PowerShell CIM cmdlets for new automation:
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_OperatingSystem
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_Process
Invoke-CimMethod -ClassName Win32_Process -MethodName Create -Arguments @{ CommandLine = 'notepad.exe' }
For remote management, document the transport and authentication boundary.
Modern CIM sessions normally use WS-Man; compatibility paths can use DCOM.
